Art Show

A DVDaria Forum has been added to the many forums at PPMB.
The purpose of the forum is to brainstorm for ideas regarding the campaign to get "Daria" released on DVD.

E. A. Smith's interview with C. E. Forman has been published at PPMB. Read it here !

If you are interested in participating with other Daria fans with "TeamSpeak", check out this thread on the PPMB.

The responses for where Helencon 2008 -- the first International Daria Convention -- should be held are still being tabulated. Check

Daria fan S. C. created this slap-happy avatar!

And S. C. also envisions what a "Dream Dariacon" would look like. Click here to share his vision. Note: this pic is 1200x800, expect it to fill your screen....

Furthermore, if you want to see S. C.'s spot-on canon sketches of Quinn and Sandi, go to this thread on PPMB.

Some Updates

First, a hearty welcome back to Greybird. Greybird had been gone for a while, and I thought he had just taken a break from fandom. As it turns out, he had been hospitalized for infection, and the hospitalization was a serious one. To coin a phrase, he was getting in the neighborhood of Tommy Sherman's falling goalposts.

He's still severely ill and on oral antibiotics. The Daria Fandom Blog hopes that he will get well, and get well soon.

Second, an interesting link: a "Daria"-based editorial from an Alabama newspaper. You can read it here .

"Resolved: That...."

I decided to compare and contrast two assertions regarding fanfiction by two good writers. One you know, and one you don't know, but you can find him on The Infamous Brad .

The first person is Kara Wild. She writes, in her DVDaria Blog entry of March 19th that:

I understand all of these sentiments, but I can't tolerate them, especially the third one. Fanfiction can be enjoyable, but its role has been to fill in the gaps left by the show, not act as a substitute for the show. Viewed alongside the actual series, fanfiction can be fascinating in its character studies and multiple "what ifs?", but without the availability of the series, a lot of fanfiction just doesn't hold up. To act as though fanfiction is a perfectly adequate substitute for the real show strikes me as irresponsible. Fanfiction should be tiding us over until we get the real series on DVD, not making us blase about whether or not the real series ever comes out.

However, Brad Hicks writes the following on March 20th -- the discussion concerns the difficulty of writing and if Alan Moore truly deserves the praise he's been given:

Not all writers get shat upon equally. Comic book writers, as Alan Moore accurately complains, get shat upon more. There's a reason for that, and that's that what they do is, yes, really is, that easy. When you consider how much of what Alan Moore has done is based entirely on other people's characters and simply continuing inherited story lines, jesus, I'll bet at least two hundred of you could (for example) have done as good a job as he did on "Swamp Thing", and I have no doubt whatsoever that any ten out of fifty random fanfic writers could have churned out fan-fic involving the same characters as "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and done a better job of it than he did. (emphasis mine - CG)

The topic for debate:

"Resolved: That the best "Daria" fanfiction writers are at least as good, if not better, than the people who wrote the "Daria" episodes. If circumstances were changed, these fanfiction writers could have done at least as well as Bernstein, Nicoll and company".

If you leave a comment, state whether you are taking the positive position (agreement) or negative position (disagreement).

Catching Up, Part I

Part I of a continuing series to bring the blog up to date.

New from The Daria News Archive:

As Autumn begins, ABC viewers in Australia are able to see again the fifth season of DARIA. On March 2nd the network began repeats of Season Five on Fridays.

New ban procedures have been posted at the PPMB. You post at the pleasure of the site owner; don't get yourself booted. (The relevant PPMB thread is here .

According to Daria fan "Crabcake", "Daria" is #17 on TVSHowsOnDVD.com, meaning that it is the seventeenth most popular show whose seasonal episodes have not been released on DVD. You have no excuse not to vote!

Happy belated 29th birthday to Daria fan E. A. Smith (March 11th)!!

Continual Delays

Once again, we have a delay, possibly the longest in Daria Fandom Blog history. Have been trying to put together a grad school application. Took the GRE today, have been assembling letters of recommendation, transcripts, and filling out applications...thus, the delay.

Until Daria goodness can be restored, here is a snowshoe bunny to keep you occupied until a hopeful update late Wednesday or early Thursday.

Pittsburgh Pee Ay

Currently on vacation in Pittsburgh. Will update someday. Hopefully, before Sunday when I get back home.

As my wife and I drove home, we saw a sign that said, "Quinn in the Morning! Radio 104.7!" And of course, I made the obvious comment, e. g., "That would make a good fanfic...."
